Science of Man (1st edition) ? Mary Glover

Original 1st edition of The Science of Man, by which the Sick are Healed Embracing Questions and Answers in Moral Science, Arranged for the Learner by Mary Baker Glover (Eddy). This item is the preeminent collectible in Christian Science and as such is exceedingly rare. One in this state is truly exceptional. This is a particularly pristine example that has been "bound-in" in a beautiful Morocco leather binding to protect it. This was Mrs. Eddy's first text used in teaching students out of which grew later the chapter that appears in her textbook, titled "Recapitulation". This item shows a pencil correction on page 13 which is possibly in Mrs. Eddy's hand. This volume was acquired from Dr. John H. Birss, perhaps the most preeminent collector of Christian Science rarities in the last 70 years and it was his professional estimation that deduced the origin of the correction on page 13, being intimately familiar with every nuance of Mrs. Eddy's writing. Copyrighted in 1870, it was first published in 1876 (Thomas P. Nichols, printer) by the author. It has blue wrappers (intact) and is 24 pages in length with protective fore and aft pages. 5-1/4" x 8-1/2; gilt stamping and decoration on front cover, spine and cover edges and inside edges of leather binding; marbled end papers; red/gold head and foot bands.
